Profile

Wendy Cushing is a renowned designer and manufacturer of furnishing tassels and trimmings. She has developed the skills and creations of passementerie into an art form. After 26 years in the industry producing both traditional and more recently contemporary work she has been an inspiration to the interior design trade. She has created new and exciting collections to compliment the changing times in interior design.

Her training began from a degree in Fashion and Textile design at Leicester University in England where her interest developed with three dimensional textiles and tapestry weaving. This interest took her to discovering the art of passementerie by working with one of the oldest trimmings companies in the UK. A Sindall Ltd were An old family business established in 1845 in Hackney East London and still working with Mr Sindall the grandson. Wendy worked as a hand weaver for three years gaining all the knowledge and experience from her mentor Mr Sindall who was 84 years old at the time. Wendy served her apprenticeship weaving traditional hand woven gimps and fringes in 17th and 18th century styles for the English Heritage and National Trust stately homes This experience proved to be an important apprenticeship for her career ahead.

In 1984 she decided to set up her on business designing and making new designs which she marketed directly to the interior design trade in London. The result was very positive which set her on her way to making custom design tassels and fringes for the trade. Her client base still remains the same today after 23 years. She has passed the skills of hand weaving and tassel making along with her technical expertise to many of her loyal staff who have worked with her company for many years.

These days her work continues to grow and the manufacturing of passementerie has changed from the traditional styles to a more simplistic approach. Wendy has experimented with many new materials such as glass beads, crystals and more fashion orientated materials. This has lead her to develop her own manufacturing over seas and she now has her own small factory in the south of India in the beautiful state of Kerala where hand-weaving is a way of life. Many of the beaded fringes are hand made in India with the more specialist crystal items being produced in the UK.
The latest collections include hand blown glass produced in London by local artists.

Wendy's creative vision has always enabled her to design and develop product for a world market. With her passion for travelling and her interest in world textiles her work is an eclectic combination of both traditional skills combined with ethnic textiles techniques. She likes simplicity in design and under statement.

She continues to work at a rapid pace producing and marketing her own collections which are sold throughout the world as well as designing collections for other major fabric houses and manufacturers internationally.
